Viņa Cousiņo Macul

Half Day

Visit the first Chilean wine company

Tour Description

Wine Cellar with CasksViņa Cousiņo Macul is located to the south-east of the centre of Santiago in the foothills of the Andes mountains.  It was established in 1856 by Luis and Isidora Cousiņo, who both travelled to France in 1863 to study the vineyards of Bordeaux, and purchase cuttings of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Sauvignon and Semillon vines which they brought back to Chile.  Descendants of these vines are still being grown today in the Macul and Buin estates.  Cousiņo Macul is also one of the first Chilean wine companies to start growing organic vines.

During the tour of the vineyard you will be told about the history of the Cousiņo family and the estate and shown some of the older examples of bottling equipment which are no longer in use.  Afterwards you will be shown how the wines are produced before being taken to the wine cellar which was built in 1872 and lies six metres underground.  The tour ends at the shop where you have the option to taste some of the wines and purchase wine and souvenirs.
