Santiago City TourTour Description
It is said that Santiago is Chile, a statement which many would argue is not far from the truth. In this city you can discover and enjoy the history, culture and architecture that make Santiago one of the most cosmopolitan cities in South America. Our tour through this city of huge contrasts will begin in the Plaza de Armas, a beautiful square in the heart of downtown Santiago. It is also considered to be the geographical reference point of Santiago to which all distances to Santiago are measured. The plaza is surrounded by many buildings of historic importance, such as the Real Audience and Casa de Gobernadores de Chile, which are now the National Museum of History and Post Office respectively, and also the Metropolitan Cathedral and the Portal Fernández Concha. Our tour will continue through the old city, visiting the marvellous halls and assembly rooms of the former National Congress, before proceeding to La Moneda, an historic building, which has witnessed many great events in Chilean history. It is now the government palace, and open to the public. As we go along Avenue Alameda we will see more examples of the city’s architecture such as the buildings which were formerly the palaces of Santiago’s aristocratic families and which are now mainly used by public and private organizations. It will then be time for lunch and our visit to a traditional restaurant will give you the opportunity to sample a variety of typical Chilean dishes. After lunch we will drive up Cerro San Cristóbal, from the top of which we will be able to enjoy beautiful panoramic views of the city and see the famous statue of the Immaculate Conception beneath which Pope John Paul II prayed for and blessed the city of Santiago in 1987.
