The
name of the region hints to what you can expect to find
here: there are 12 major lakes and six volcanoes. The Lakes
and Volcanoes district is the adventurous traveller’s
playground. Ancient forests, raging rivers, smoking volcanoes
and immense glaciers blanket the land. For many years the
only inhabitants of this awe-inspiring land were the equally
majestic indigenous people, the Mapuche.
Today
visitors to this area can match themselves against the fierce
landscape by participating in adventure activities. One
of the highlights of the region is Volcan Villarica which
is one of the most active volcanoes on earth. It is possible
to take a guided trek to the huge smoldering crater and
see the eruptions from close range. Whether it’s skiing
on an active volcano in Pucón, rafting boiling rapids
in Puerto Varas, or relaxing in one of the many thermal
hot springs, this area offers something for everyone.
